Our Village Through The Ages

2nd of September 2009

Over the week-end of June 27/28 a wonderful exhibition took place in the Village Hall to mark its centenary year. Richard Edwards, Chairman of the Village Hall Committee, thanked all those who had helped in the preparation and organisation of the event and then invited the Deputy Mayor of Dacorum, Cllr. Roger Taylor, to declare the exhibition officially open.
Over 500 people visited the exhibition and were treated to a wonderful display of photographs of the village over the past 100 years – including the churches, businesses, farms, shops, pubs, sporting events and school, to name but a few. There was special emphasis on the many clubs and societies who have used the Village Hall over the years – the theatre group, choral and horticultural societies, bowls, mothers and toddlers and baby clinic, as well as wedding and birthday parties, dances and more. All this had been compiled by Mary and David Nobbs together with their son, Andrew. We are also grateful for the assistance of the Curator of the Dacorum heritage Trust’s Museum Store in Berkhamsted, who kindly lent a book illustrating life in Chipperfield during 1965 which had been compiled by the WI.
On the stage, Terry Simmonds had assembled another exhibition of photographs entitled “Garden Scene – 100 years in the making” showing the history of the Simmonds family and how the business evolved.
Other helpers provided a popular barbeque on Saturday and teas and home-made cakes were served on Sunday.
A great deal of team effort was involved in making the week-end such an interesting and enjoyable occasion and our thanks must go out to all the organisers and helpers for their hard work in making it so successful. Thank you.
