St Pauls And Holy Cross

2nd of December 2008

“For unto us ….a President is given, and the government will be upon his shoulders…” Barack Obama was elected US President in an atmosphere of engagement and enthusiasm not seen in decades, with a real expectation of change. Some are ecstatic at his election, others no doubt saddened, or perhaps resigned. Many are wondering how he will turn out to be now the campaigning is over, and we await the reality of his leadership and authority.
I, like so many, have had no voice in choosing him (other than in my prayers): but it is undoubtedly the case that how he and those who work alongside him handle their responsibilities will have real impact upon the whole world.
The self confidence of the western world has been deeply shaken (by whom?) over recent weeks, and the impact is felt worldwide. There is a real sense that we face decidedly uncertain days. How will this new President turn out to be? One wonders if George Bush would have been elected if the US had known how he would use his power? Human leaders are after all only human, with all the frailty that involves.
“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government will be upon his shoulders” spoke the prophet Isaiah over two and a half millennia ago “And He will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace” Isaiah continued.
At Christmas we are invited especially to celebrate His coming; in Him we see Gods rule demonstrated. He does not impose His rule on us, but invites us to receive it. His is the way of wisdom, compassion, justice and peace for which so many hearts yearn. Yet so many pay only lip service to Him or ignore him altogether to our own and others real damage. May this Christmas season be one where we and many others open ourselves afresh to his just and gentle rule. Jim Stevens
