Chipperfield Horticultural Society

2nd of December 2008

Around 100 local gardeners filled the Parish Room on 30 September to hear a talk by one of Britain’s top garden designers, Tom Stuart-Smith. Living locally at the Barn, Serge Hill, Bedmond, Tom is passionate about herbaceous perennials and their use in medium and large gardens and his talk was well illustrated with views of some of the fantastic gardens he has designed, both in this country and on the continent.
Using carpets of plants, including Phlomis, Salvia and Alchemilla, together with ornamental grasses and bulbs and a selection of topiary, he has created quite sensational planting in the terraced garden at Broughton Cottage in Oxfordshire and the very extensive gardens at Trentham Park in Staffordshire. In his own garden Tom has used roses, shrubs and herbaceous plants interspersed with tall biennial Verbascums and in the RHS Gardens at Wisley he used a selection of plants suitable for dry conditions in his planting in front of the new Bi-Centennial Glasshouse.
A regular gold medal winner at Chelsea Flower Show, Tom’s wonderful Laurent Perrier Garden at this year’s event had the honour of being judged ‘Best in Show’. His own garden at Serge Hill should be open to the public on a Sunday during June 2009 (full details will be in Chipperfield News nearer the time).
