1st of November 2014

Our final show of the year was held on 20 September in the Village Hall. Despite the gloomy weather outside, the hall was filled with wonderful flowers and produce. The dahlias and chrysanthemums were truly outstanding, both in size and colour, and a joy to behold. As always at this show, the vegetables come into their own and this year was no exception. The judge remarked how high the standard was; they were beautifully presented and he was extremely impressed, as were we all. The floral art was beautiful and so clever in the way the subjects had been interpreted. The children had drawn lovely pictures showing the four seasons of the year which were a very welcome part of the show. The handicraft and domestic sections were well supported and looked wonderful. The prizes were presented at the end of the day by Rev. Michele du Saire, followed by an auction of produce and a raffle. The proceeds from the raffle were donated to the proposed new burial ground. Thank you to everyone who supported it. We also had a special raffle. Jane Whittles, our treasurer, who is a gifted needlewoman, had made a beautiful quilt which had been on display at all three of our shows and was very much admired.

The overall winner of the Silver Rose Bowl with 54 points was John Hopkins; this is for the most points in vegetable, fruit and flower classes. The runner up winning the W. Bates Cup with 53 points was Alec Parker. John also won the special prize of a load of manure, generously donated by Roger Pritchard, for the most points in the vegetables section. (See further prize winners below.)

It was a great show to finish the year and we must thank all those who help both on the day, beforehand and clearing away at the end; we just could not manage without you and you are very much appreciated. Ann Soanes
