Baptist Church

1st of July 2014

A double whammy for us all with this edition of Chipp News. July/August, the height of summer, or the depths of an unseasonal wash out? Which one? You decide! If only that were the case, eh? I know from personal experience that, to quote The Rolling Stones, “you can’t always get what you want, but if you try sometimes, you just might find you get what you need”. Again, if only that were the case! (This quote should not be taken as a hint to my age, just my musical upbringing).

When push comes to shove, and shove is the operative word, we don’t stop at what we need but push incessantly at what we want. Or maybe I should say, what we think we need becomes strangely similar to what we want. The outcome of which is, not surprisingly, a position that looks much like selfishness. I can’t count the number of times I have said, “ but I need this”, “ it is important that I have that” or “this thing will really help me”. All valid statements upon first hearing but I know that they are not, by any means, at all valid. The reason is, I know, that I just wanted this or that thing.

I don’t want to put a downer on anyone having stuff, if I were to do that I would be left sitting in a cold, sparse office, scribbling by candlelight on a slate tablet with chalk (you can guess my want is technology). I want a lot of things and some of them I do need but the important thing is actually knowing the difference. I am obviously not an expert, but a mere apprentice at this, but I guess that what I need is actually just as important to everyone else as it is to me. That might make US, in the end, more important than ME? WE can only hope!
Love Jason, The Man in the Manse
