Songs For St Paul’s Church

1st of March 2014

Sunday evening, 9 February saw a full church, bedecked by flowers and candles for a delightful concert given by Rosemary Clifford and two of her opera-singing friends Suzi Saperia and Catrin Lewis. The majority of the pieces were accompanied impressively by Louisa Lam who like all of the girls, is a former student of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, all now making their way in the world of professional music. As a group, they perform under the title “Leading Ladies”. The concert was given in aid of music making at St Paul’s.

The programme was musically wide-ranging, beginning with the aria Et Exultavit from Bach’s Magnificat “And my spirit (doth rejoice)” This and the beautiful Pie Jesu from the Durufle Requiem were organ accompanied, by Keith Beniston. Later there were well-known opera extracts, some as solos and others cleverly arranged as vocal trios, traditional folk songs famously arranged by Benjamin Britten and ending with some simply delicious timeless gems such as Ivor Novello’s “We’ll gather Lilacs” and Harold Arlen’s “Somewhere over the rainbow”

All of the artists performed without fees, and enthusiastic appreciation was shown by the audience both through rapturous applause, and through freewill giving which provided St Paul’s music fund with the outstanding sum of almost £1200. This will be enormously helpful in facilitating the musical projects undertaken by St Paul’s, and for which generosity the church is most grateful.
