The full capacity audiences at the Choral Society’s much loved Christmas concerts enjoyed both traditional and new carols in St Paul’s on 14 December. The concerts began with a resounding rendition of ‘O come all ye faithful’ and finished with ‘Hark the Herald Angels’. In between, Delia Meehan, now in her 23rd season as the choir’s Musical Director, had put together a varied programme encompassing new and old carols and a selection of Christmas readings. The readings were vividly brought to life by Tim Norton, Head of Drama at Haberdashers Aske’s Boys’ Schools.

Rosemary Clifford, following her successful solo debut at the Really Big Chorus Messiah in the Royal Albert Hall the week before, performed the ‘Carol of the Birds’ and ‘Bethlehem Down’ as well as solo roles in some of the choral carols. Alan Taylor, one of the choir’s patrons, writes a new carol for the choir every year and this year the audience were treated to a first performance of his lyrical new carol ‘Cradle Song’. The choir and audience were accompanied by Keith Beniston on the organ and the capacity audience gave him the opportunity to demonstrate the full power of St Paul’s magnificent pipe organ. Rosemary Venner, the choir’s rehearsal pianist, gave her usual excellent accompaniment of the solos and some of the choir pieces.

Many people say the Choral Society Christmas concerts mark the beginning of Christmas and this year Christmas was given a very good musical start in Chipperfield by this festive blend of old and new carols.

The Choral Society’s next concert will be at St John’s in Boxmoor on Saturday 15 March where they will be performing the Mozart Requiem, Bizet Te Deum and Laudamus Te by Karl Jenkins. Further information and ticket availability from the choir’s website: www.chipperfieldchoral.co. uk
