St Paul’s And Holy Cross

1st of May 2012

What is electricity? At least we can say it is something which “gives life” to things which, without it, are simply “dead” – like a light bulb – or my computer – or the London Underground!

We cannot “see” it, but we are very much aware of its presence and reality when it empowers things designed to receive it – in right measure! It is powerful, empowering – and dangerous!

So, what do we think of Jesus? Just a nice story – or perhaps a dangerous deception? Someone whom we cannot “see” but who might just “be around”? He made an extraordinary claim – to be God come to visit – and history is quite definite about the reality of his death and resurrection .– without which he would have been forgotten long ago. Why did God come thus? – Just for fun? – What could have been the purpose of such a visit?

Just as my computer “comes to life” when electricity is “alive” within it, so we “come to life” when God, by his Holy Spirit, dwells in us (and how much more wonderful am I than my computer, and Jesus Christ than electricity!).

We have been created to “be filled” – filled by God’s living presence! This is amazing, awesome, yet the very reason why Christ came!

This month the church celebrates this “coming” of the Holy Spirit, available to all! We cannot “see” Him, but lives changed, fulfilled, bear witness to his presence.
My life is so different from what it might be because I have eyes – receivers! which are open to receiving. I don’t generate seeing. I see because light comes to me, and my eyes receive. If my eyes did not work, that would not mean that light was not around!
What sort of access might the person of Jesus Christ have in your life and mine?
With my prayers and greetings, Jim Stevens
