St Paul’s And Holy Cross
When I was small an Easter egg was a real treat and, of course, it was empty inside; just a shell of chocolate which was much enjoyed. It was only many years later that I learnt why the egg was empty; simply because it was a reminder that on the first Easter Day, the tomb was empty; Jesus was raised from the dead – alive for evermore! Certainly not held by death, nor subject to the limitations of a human body, but wonderfully, eternally alive!
Today it is really hard to find an empty Easter egg for they are filled with sweets and chocolates to enjoy….and enjoyable they are too…. but I cannot help wondering if we have lost something; that our lives have become so full of things to enjoy that we miss out on the reality that brings deepest joy and lasting satisfaction, the presence of Jesus, alive, risen, dwelling in the very deepest place of our being. Have we somehow crowded Him out, too preoccupied with the ‘good things of life’ that we miss out on what is by far the best, did we but know it?
Easter comes towards the end of the month – so we have time to think afresh about Jesus:- God – emptying himself of the wonders of ‘glory’ to come alongside us in the person of Jesus.
Jesus – emptying himself of all but love at the cross, to deal with the follies and failures of our life, and leaving an empty tomb to remind us that He is readily available to fill our lives with His presence, once we are willing for Him to clear out the clutter! May I wish you much joy in Him, not just for Easter, but for always.
With my greetings, Jim Stevens
