World War 2 Service People
The following names will be familiar to older Chipperfield residents and we would
really appreciate your help with a telephone number, name or address of anyone who
can put us in touch with a member of their family. We have found that when contacted,
people are most appreciative of the research we are doing and are only too willing to
provide information and photographs.
Robert Andrews who lived at Roughcot, Scatterdells Lane with his parents. His sister
was Violet Beattie. He married Dorothy from Glasgow at St Paul’s in 1946. He had
two daughters, Heather and Rona.
Ron Bass who features in old football club team photographs. Ron and his wife,
Muriel, lived in Queen Street with Lesley Margaret born in 1943 and Richard Terrence
born in 1946.
Eric Bates. I actually went to see Eric in Toms Lane in 1998 and borrowed a
photograph of a First World War soldier, but didn’t ask him about his own Second
World War service. He was secretary of the football club before joining the RAF from
which he was invalided out. Does anyone have contact with Winnie Bates’ family?
Frank Clarke who lived at 62 Tower Hill and died in 1964. He had a brother–in-law,
W Stockley, who lived in New Road.
Robert Cooke who lived at The Ash in Bucks Hill was killed in a motor bike accident
in 1949. He was married to Olive Durrant who we understand remarried in 1951.
F and H Darvill, about whom we have no information whatsoever.
L E Darvill was a prisoner of war who served with the Royal Fusiliers.
If you think you can help trace any of these people, please contact me.
