St Paul’s And Holy Cross

1st of April 2010

When it comes to it, for whom will you use your vote? For whoever you think should be Prime Minister? Or will you use it along Party lines because of the policies they seek to implement if they find themselves invited to form the next Government? Or perhaps you will vote for whichever candidate you sense would be the best constituency MP over the coming years?
Perhaps, because of the bad Press politicians have had to face over recent months (many of them unjustly), you are disillusioned with those who seek to govern us, and with the system of government itself.
Well, personally I feel enormously privileged not to live in a totalitarian or repressive state, for at least we all do have the opportunity of changing those who govern us. At least..! Well, no, what a privilege and responsibility – even though our system may not be perfect!
So; for whom to vote…? Parties do matter, for groups of people will always achieve more than a mass of unconnected individuals. As for me, I look for someone with integrity, honesty, a sense of compassion and justice for all – whose heart is to serve, rather than to “be in power” (a phrase I just don’t like) – for someone who can acknowledge mistakes, be ready to have their thinking changed, and honour those with whom they might widely disagree… Let us use our privilege wisely.
And of course it is Easter time, when we should be reminded who holds real authority in and wider that the world, who amazingly is interested in every detail of life, and who is ready to guide and sustain those who are willing to listen, and adjust their thinking and decision making accordingly.
With my greetings, Jim Stevens
