John William Gilbert (jack) 12.6.34 – 7.11.09

1st of February 2010

It was a great shock to the Gilbert family when Jack died so suddenly in November and difficult to cope with losing someone with such a sunny disposition always ready to make someone laugh. He had never left Chipperfield except when sent to Germany, Korea and Japan for his National Service. He was good at most sport but most of all he was a good husband, brilliant father and grandfather, whose girls adored him. He said he had the three best daughters a man could have. He died doing the thing he loved most – dancing. The Baptist Church was filled to capacity for his funeral service, everyone knew Jack was a special person who could lift your spirits and make you feel good. It was a real privilege to have shared his life, known him and loved him. A light went out on November 7th but his beacon will be with us forever. The Gilbert family

Jack’s daughters would like to thank everyone who attended his funeral. Also for the kind cards and donations for Rowden House School which in total raised £1,079.16p.

Jack was my best mate in the army, we met on the train going to start our national service in 1952 and shared the good times and not so good together. Our training sergeant nick-named us “Gilbert & Sullivan” the first day, and that stayed with us for two years, Jack would say, “You always talk us into trouble, and i’ll try and talk us out of it.” It seemed to some we were joined at the hip, as were ever Gilbert was, Sullivan was not far away,we watched each others backs and I trusted Jack with my life. Some of the things we got up to then makes me wonder how we got away with. A truely wonderful man and one day we will be “Gilbert and Sullivan” again. of that I am sure. Rest easy pal.
