The Royal British Legion – Poppy Appeal

15th of October 2009

The purpose of the Legion is to safeguard the welfare, interests and memory of those who are serving or who have served in the Armed Forces.
In our work we provide financial, social and emotional support to Service people, past and present, and their dependants.  We do this because we believe a career in the Armed Forces differs from any other.  Service people agree to sacrifice civil liberties to follow orders and to place themselves in harm’s way in the defence of others.  In return, the Nation promises to help and support them and their families where they most need it – when it does not do this, the Legion steps in.
Our nationwide network of volunteers and staff work locally – often with partner organisations – to help those in need.  We provide funds for those living in poverty and help for others to live independently.  We provide residential care for vulnerable, older people and also help others to develop their vocational skills and to find sustainable employment.
So, when the Poppy Appeal collector knocks on your door towards the end of this month, we hope you will give as generously as you have done in the past.
Remembrance Sunday is on the 8th November and we hope you will join us at the War Memorial on the Common at 10.55am followed by the Remembrance Service in St Paul’s Church.
