Cricket Club News
The new set up at the Club certainly seems to have generated a good deal of interest and a welcome breath of fresh air has swept through the Club. As we approach the end of the season the Saturday sides are reasonably secure in their divisions and dependant on restructuring the fourth eleven may have achieved promotion. Our Sunday league performances have matched Saturday’s and both sides are also looking for honours. We have reached the semi-final stage of the Herts County Trophy and are hopeful that we will progress to the final, visit our website for details of forthcoming fixtures.
The twenty/twenty squad has provided success and victory in the Watford Observer Plate was achieved at the expense of Bushey C.C., Drew McMillan taking man of the match, whilst in the Gazette Cup after winning our qualifying group we reached the final only to lose narrowly to Hemel Hempstead Town.
An encouraging feature of the year has been the success of home grown talent, two of our younger players, Freddy Hampson 17 and Bradley Finch 15 have scored maiden centuries. Both are sons of former players and have benefited from the coaching received at the Club. Our younger cricketers enjoyed a mixed season, the under twelves failing to record a victory but the signs for the future are encouraging with a number of new players emerging. The under tens also had a difficult year and a very small squad were delighted to be able to boast of a victory over the might of Hemel Hempstead Town. Any parents in the area who have offspring who may aspire to become the future KP or Monty please contact the Club.
The newly strengthened Committee is grateful for the Grants received from Parish and Dacorum, thanks to Councillor Roberts, which have assisted us in maintaining the Common up to the highest standard. Our stalwart groundsmen Malcolm Durrant and Robin Veith aided by a new assistant Graham Gregory have again provided the village with a facility which must be the envy of many other villages.
Our major fund raiser of the year the Summer Ball was attended by 346 guests who enjoyed a wonderful evening on what proved to be another memorable occasion. Congratulations to Robert Churchill junior and the rest of his organising committee. Thanks to those local organisations who helped us especially Ricketts, the butchers, who didn’t supply the meat but did help with keeping the Champagne cold. Although the Summer Ball does create a disturbance to normal village life we trust that our neighbours were not too inconvenienced and appreciate that the funds are used for the benefit of the village.
The Pavilion is available to other organisations and individuals to run functions and has proved a popular venue with all who have hired it.
