Annual Guided Walk Around Chipperfield Common

2nd of July 2009

A wonderfully sunny evening greeted more than 30 residents on 20 May for the welcome reinstatement of the annual guided walk around Chipperfield Common. Colin Chambers, the new Woodlands Officer at Dacorum Borough Council, led the walk ably assisted by Claire Covington. The leisurely walk lasted well over an hour, taking in some of the very best aspects of this wonderful woodland. Colin pointed out some of the historic trees, thought to be at least 350 years old; the benefits of leaving a good proportion of felled trees for insect and bird life; as well as the perimeter planting along the remains of the old boundary. The careful balancing that is required in managing the woodland became evident as the walk progressed, particularly with regard to the issue of native and non-native planting. The evening finished with some interesting questions, including the puzzle over the lack of bluebells within the wood.
A warm round of applause for Colin and Claire wrapped up a wonderful evening.
Although the walk has been held intermittently in recent years, it is very much hoped that this will now be a regular annual event in the life of the village. The proposed establishment of a Friends of Chipperfield Common should allow residents further insight and influence over the management of this key part of the village.
