Horticultural Society Spring Show

2nd of May 2009

After a long cold winter, the spring sunshine came at just the right time for the Chipperfield Horticultural Society Show on 21 March.
The week before the show saw a change in the weather, the sun shone, at times it was almost like summer. This brought the daffodils and other spring bulbs, which were still in tight bud the previous week, into flower and they filled our Village Hall with dazzling colour. Not only in classes of their own, but also in wonderful floral arrangements, our hall came alive with their beauty.
Our handicraft section was a tribute to the talent we have in our village, wonderful quilts, paintings and drawings, soft toys, canvaswork and knitting. Our domestic section saw numerous jars of marmalade and chutneys, jam tarts, bread, cakes and pasties all looking and tasting wonderful. Our three photography classes were very well filled and the standard improves with every show. Our junior section is always a joy and this year was no exception. All in all a great show, thanks to our Show Secretary, Roger Pigg and his committee and helpers.
The Abrahams Cup for the overall points winner was awarded to Pauline Williams and the H. Simmonds Cup for the runner up was awarded to last year’s winner, Elizabeth Percy. Ann Soanes

The news that our dear friend and colleague, Liz Holliday, had died came with a sense of shock and left us greatly saddened. Liz had been an enthusiastic member of the Horticultural Society for many years, supporting the shows with entries of produce from her allotment and also demonstrating photographic skills. We were very grateful for her taking on the office of Secretary to the society at a time of need a year or so ago, and most recently being elected to Chairman of Committee; all this among her many other commitments and for far too brief a time. Liz will be remembered with admiration and great affection.
