News From St. Pauls School

20th of December 2008

During the first week of November we held another of our themed weeks in which the whole school departs from the normal timetable. Our theme this time was Inspirations and was largely Art and RE based, although all aspects of the curriculum were covered.
Some classes visited the National Gallery to learn about religious art; others went for a walk in the woods. We have learned about inspirational people such as Martin Luther King, Mother Theresa and of course Jesus!
We have had lots of inspirational people come to visit us too: Graham Boyd, Wendy Dowling and Jane Tonkin (all local artists) and Pete Churchill who is a great jazz musician. Kings Langley Secondary School Jazz Band came to play for us and we had visits from various staff from KLS Art Department who worked with the children on a variety of projects.
We have made a variety of pieces of art work based on the “I am” sayings of Jesus such as “I am the true vine” and “I am the light of the world”. We had a lot of time for reflection on things that inspired us during the week also.
During the same week we also made poppy wreaths and posters of remembrance for the Our Village at War performance in the village hall.
Year 5 children also had a week of cycle training and many of them gained their Level 2 awards which enable them to cycle on the roads. We are keen to encourage as many children as possible to walk or cycle to school to both improve fitness and to reduce the amount of traffic in the area. Please be aware of the needs of our young cycle users when they are using the roads.
We have just had some exciting news about two of our teachers, Mrs Hill and Mrs Ridout, who have been selected to go on a Teachers International Professional Development trip to Mexico early next year! This is funded by the British Council and will contribute to the schools development enormously as we further our knowledge of schools and children in other communities. We are enormously privileged to have been chosen for this project and will keep you informed of further developments through Chipperfield News!
